TWIML Presents: OpenAI

800 800 The TWIML AI Podcast (formerly This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence)

The show is part of a series that I’m really excited about, in part because I’ve been working to bring them to you for quite a while now. The focus of the series is a sampling of the interesting work being done over at OpenAI, the independent AI research lab founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman and others.

Support for this OpenAI Series is brought to you by our friends at NVIDIA, a company which is also a supporter of OpenAI itself. If you’re listening to this podcast, you already know about NVIDIA and all the great things they’re doing to support advancements in AI research and practice. What you may not know is that the company has a significant presence at the NIPS conference going on this week in Long Beach California, including four accepted papers. To learn more about the NVIDIA presence at NIPS head on over to, and be sure to visit them at the conference.

I hope I’m wrong. I get the impression that Elon is not getting his money’s worth. They seem to be reinforcing the summoning of the deamon and have no sound ideas on how to prevent the exisrential threat. Their claim to unique value in promoting general AI is being done really well by DeepMind and, by the way, is a key enabling technoloty for the deamon. And they arent even completely open with their code, which was Elon’s thought for counteracting the evil AI

There is more to that. Dario explains it better, but you can’t really publish everything as you’ll help the daemon summoners. Also publishing the code and work slows internal research at OpenAI. It’s tricky to strike the right balance I’m sure.
